The big day

Keithen took his test this morning for placement in the EXCEL program for gifted students. I can't wait until he gets home to hear how he thinks it went. We won't know if he is accepted until sometime in April, but I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be in the top 5% of the students tested.

He seemed to think that he did OK. There were four sections to the test: math, reading, writing and I think an IQ test. It took about 2 hours to do the whole thing. We won't know anything about the results until mid-April.

He turned 7 on Feb. 1st and is in first grade. He is reading at a 5th grade 4th month level already and can do math pretty advanced for a first grader...not sure what level he is in math right now. (He reads books like the Series of Unfortunate Events chapter books on his own.) The accelerated program in our school district starts in 2nd grade, so he is testing for placement for next school year.

    Adam -

Keithen is in a public school. It's a pretty good school system.

His KG teacher was a first year teacher who was very excited about his new job. This year he has a lady who has been teaching for 30 years, so he is getting the benefit of a teacher with lots of experience. They have tried to work to keep him challenged, but it is difficult with 20 or so other kids to teach.

Last year he was given special library privledges that other KG kids did not get. When they worked on basic reading skills in class, he could sit and read his chapter books from the library. His teacher sent home extra pages of harder math work last year.

This year his teacher trys to give him assignments on the computer or to send him to second grade classrooms to visit for reading sometimes. She has worked hard to give him take-home books that will challenge him twice a week. She has also worked with us this semester to customize his homework a bit. (He HATED the copywork of writing the spelling words that were too easy over and over. Instead, we focus on the challenge words and write sentences or stories.)

He spent some time this past year counting to something like 100,000 (I forget...it may have been more) on his abacus at home. He had a piece of paper to write where he stopped each day.

One of my good friends has a son with Aspergers and one of Keithen's classmates may be getting an Aspergers diagnosis, so I am familiar with it to some degree...from the outside anyway.

Keithen took a long time to be interested in learning to write, even though he had such a great interest in being read to and learning to read himself. I'd say he was probably getting close to five by the time he showed interest. (In contrast, my now 5 year old has been writing her letters for a year now.) Keithen's handwriting was really still pretty bad leaving KG. It has improved a lot this school year. He is being evaluated for speech therapy soon as he isn't easy to understand for people who don't know him well. (Personally, I think part of that is confidence. He needs to speak louder and slower basically. We'll see what the speech therapist says after his evaluation.) He has been hard to toilet train. (See my post on enuresis.) I have recently heard that ALL these things could be related to his fine motor skills being a bit behind.

He plays soccer and is an awesome goalie, but isn't so good at the running part when they take him out of the net. He's becoming more coordinated with the running and kicking since he's been playing for nearly 2 years now. We saw a big change in his ability after he started chiropractic last year too.

Keithen just learned to tie his shoes over the winter break. And he has to do it the "bunny ears" way which is a bit of a shortcut.
